Nainital is a pleasant hill station situated at an altitude of 1938 m in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and is the administrative headquarters of Nainital district in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas. Nainital appears in ancient legends and is the former summer capital of United Province. It is surrounded by a number of satellite tourist spots and subcentres.

  • Naini Peak (2611 m): It is a 6-km (2.5-hr) walk to the highest point in Nainital, which commands superb views of Nanda Devi and the Indian Himalayas.
  • Snow View (2270 m): At the end of this 2.5-km (1-hr) walk, you can enjoy a fine view of the Himalayan range through a powerful binocular telescope.
  • Kahala Garden (2265 m): The valley and slopes around Kahala Garden offer attractions to naturalists, painters, trekkers, and bird watchers. The area is rich in flora and fauna.
  • Camel's Back (2600 m): A 5.5-km walk through mature forest with pleasant views of the plains.
  • Kilbury (2215 m): A 12-km trek leads to a picnic spot at a government forest rest house with splendid sunset and Himalaya views. Abundant flora and fauna.
  • Khurpa Tal: 12 kilometers to a small picturesque lake for fishing and swimming, which is also a well-known picnic spot.
  • Kanchi Temple: 14 kilometers. This group of temples near a river was built by Baba Neam Korali, a famous philosopher. An enjoyable trek from Nainital through deep forest.
  • Hanuman Garhi (1950 m): 3.25 km to beautiful sunset views from this group of temples. Nearby is the state observatory, which can be visited by appointment on certain days.

  4. Nainital to Petaria to Ranu Dhar to Ger Khet and return to Nainital, a 13.5-km round trip.
  5. Nainital to Birla Chungi to Dunikhal to Kahala Garden and return to Nainital, a 15-km round trip.
  6. Nainital to Kahala Garden to Purani Chungi to Lal Pani (waterfall) and return to Nainital, a 14-km round trip.
  7. Nainital to Snow View to Naini Peak to Pangot to Rathighat and return to Nainital by bus, a 32-km round trip.
  8. Old Graveyards (over 150 years old), Khurpatal Road and Bhowali Road, a 12-km round trip.

TREKKING TO LOCAL VILLAGES

Ghugukhan Trek (Rs 1500 per person, including basic Indian-style accommodation, all meals and teas):

Nainital to Tanki to Naini Peak to Pangot to Ghugukhan (overnight stay). The next morning, Ghughkhan to Pangot to Kilbury to Tanki and return to Nainital, a 28-km round trip.

Attractions include Ghanial Devi Temple hill, sunset from Harayal, an overnight stay with a local village family, home-cooked Kumaoni meals, magnificent views of the Himalayas and plains, wildlife and bird watching.
